Woman killed in Quality Hill shooting Monday morning identified: KCPD

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Police Department identified a woman who died in a shooting near an elementary school in Quality Hill on Monday morning.

According to police, reports of a fatal shooting at 11th and Washington Street in downtown Kansas City came through around 8:30 a.m.

Upon arrival, officers were taken to 32-year-old Shamra Whitney who was found unresponsive in the street near a car.

According to a news release, police called EMS and aided Whitney until they arrived. They later pronounced her dead at the scene.

KCPD said they detained a woman labeled as a ‘subject of interest’ at the scene for further investigations.

The shooting was near the Crossroads Academy – Quality Hill Charter School, and according to police, the school was placed on lockdown as a preventive measure. However, the school and the surrounding area were not believed to be under an active threat.

Preliminary investigations suggest Whitney and the woman had an “interaction” near the 11th and Washington Street intersection. Officers said the interaction ended up escalating into a deadly shooting where Whitney was struck.

KCPD said this is an active and ongoing investigation.
