1 dead, 2 injured after crash in Johnson County

JOHNSON COUNTY, Kan. — One person has died and two others were injured after a crash in Johnson County on Sunday morning.

Around 8 a.m., the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office was called to a two-vehicle crash near southbound I-35/Sunflower Road. This caused officers to shut down the highway.

One vehicle with one occupant crashed into a vehicle with three occupants. The driver of the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene.

She has been identified as 76-year-old Sherry L. Pena.

The other two passengers were a 45-year-old female and 6-year-old male. They were transported to the hospital in critical condition. They are both expected to survive.

Officers performed DUI tests on the driver of the vehicle that caused the crash at the scene. He was arrested and taken to the Johnson County Adult Detention Center.

He was charged with involuntary manslaughter and has been identified as 39-year-old Jason Brumley.
