Zenless Zone Zero, HoYoverse’s new urban fantasy RPG, is coming to the PlayStation 5. The new announcement was accompanied by a sensational gameplay trailer at PlayStation’s first State of Play this year.

HoYoverse’s new game will differ heavily from Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail, although it will retain the real-time action RPG elements of the former. The game was first revealed in 2022 with closed beta tests following the announcement of HoYoverse’s new game.

Zenless Zone Zero takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where civilization has been destroyed by a disaster known as the Hollows. Only one city, New Eridu, managed to survive by acquiring newfound technology. Of course, like any post-apocalyptic city in video games, New Eridu has monsters roaming around who spread the corruption of the Hollows. The game will put players in the shoes of a “Proxy” — professional agents who guide others in their exploration of the Hollows.

Combat in Zenless Zone Zone looks like it will be faster-paced than Genshin’s encounters. The trailer shows some new characters fighting against mechs, along with new looks at the streets of New Eridu. Players will be able to meet and join a diverse cast of characters like Asha, who runs the Arcade God Finger. The player character is a special kind of Agent who can use the innovative Hollow Deep Dive system to navigate the Hollows.

Whether the game receives any special attention on PS5 remains to be seen. While it most likely won’t include any fancy effects like ray tracing, having a good implementation of the Dualsense’s haptics can go a long way in improving the feel of combat.

Zenless Zone Zero will be released sometime later in 2024 on PC, iOS, Android and PS5.
