Wintertime footwear options are relatively easy-going. You have boots! Uggs! Fuzzy slippers! Sneakers! You know, the slightly more simple shoe styles that aren’t quite as controversial or internet-dividing as some we tend to see when the weather heats up. Come spring and summer, there’s slightly more, dare I say, chaotic footwear that’s certainly conversation-starting—and Zendaya just wore the most out-there pair of flats that you’re only going to see more of.

The Challengers actress was photographed out and about in New York in the perfect springtime outfit, featuring an oversized gray tee, emblazoned with the phrase, “I told ya,” a nod to her newest tennis film (which is on my weekend watch list, BTW!). Over top, she wore a baggy trench coat, a seasonal must-have that makes you look richer in mere seconds, plus, black trousers and then those shoes that you might have to squint to see.

At first glance, you might think Zendaya isn’t wearing anything on her feet—but then common sense will kick in and you’ll remember that there’s no way that she wouldn't wear shoes while walking around the Big Apple. So, then you might proceed to zoom in further to reveal that she’s wearing a pair of netted ballet flats that are right in line with the cool but slightly chaotic mesh shoe trend we started to see pop up in the fashion scene last year. Clearly, there are big things in store for this particular naked shoe this summer, too.

The mesh (or net) ballet flat is exactly what it sounds like—a low-to-the-ground ballerina with a see-through mesh or netted upper, revealing your feet (or oftentimes your pedi, too!), for a nearly naked shoe look that’s certainly going to make people do a double take. But, there’s no denying that the style is actually super cool; with its textured upper, it’s going to level up any of your otherwise simple looks with some much-needed edge. Not to mention, your feet will actually be able to breathe, which is ideal for hot, sweaty summers.

Zendaya isn’t the first celeb to wear them, and she won’t be the last, either. Chrissy Teigen and Jennifer Lopez have both been seen in their own version of mesh flats; Jennifer Lawrence is also a fan, and TBH, those are all the celebs I need to know a trend is worth trying. So, join me in adding some netted flats to your springtime shoe rotation—I have a feeling I’ll be obsessed.
