Y hosts activities, ninja skills competition

Apr. 18—Healthy Kids Day, a free event featuring activities, nutritious snacks and community information, takes place Saturday at Meadville Family YMCA's downtown branch from 8 a.m. to noon.

At the same time, the Y will also host a kids ninja skills competition in conjunction with Bill Lawrence Personal Fitness. Ninja contest entry admission is $30 for Y members and $45 for nonmembers.

"It is a free event to the community and it is all about keeping them informed on what's available to them in the community," said Alivia Smock, assistant program and human resources coordinator for the Y.

Among the activities available at the Y for the event are lots of inflatable games, Smock added, including ax throwing, as well as dart blaster toys and basketball.

"This is our first time having it," Smock said of the inflatable ax-throwing activity, "so we're pretty excited about it."

The event is open to people of all ages and should especially appeal to families with young children, according to Smock.

Also sure to be exciting is the ninja skills competition, which consists of an obstacle course that stretches throughout the Y's gymnastics facility located at 940 Park Ave., directly above Bill Lawrence Personal Fitness. In addition to the second-floor obstacle course, a variety of fitness competition activities will be available for participants in the first-floor personal fitness center.

Participants will be divided by age with groups for 4- to 6-year-olds, 7- to 9-year-olds, and 10- to 14-year-olds. Awards and prizes will be available for all participants.
