The Women’s Center spreads awareness this Sexual Assault Awareness Month

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WJMN) – April is Sexual Assault Awareness month and the Women’s Center is raising awareness all month long. Sexual assault is an issue that affects millions of people across the world of all ages, backgrounds, and genders. The Women’s Center is hosting events to raise awareness for the issue in hopes to educate and prevent.

“One key message to remember is to believe sexual assault survivors,” said Jennine Frazier the Executive Director at the Women’s Center. “If they are not met with a supportive environment, it could hinder them from seeking services. So the Women’s Center provides many services for sexual assault survivors. Some of them are, we have a 24/7 support line that you can call. We also have Harbor House, which is a safe shelter for you. We also have advocacy, legal advocacy. We have a support group that meets weekly. And we also have therapists who are specialized in sexual assault.”

Some events hosted to raise awareness this month include a fundraiser at Huron Mountain Bakery on April 13th, a coffee crawl fundraiser on April 20th, a Yoga and Mimosas fundraiser on April 21st, and more.

Some of the events available everyday throughout the month include an Empowerment art display at Masonic Square, an awareness display at Pakratz, Community Teal Ribbon Displays, and Purses with a Purpose.

“Some of the ways that you can support and raise awareness during the month of April is to wear teal,” said Frazier. “That is the color of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and you’ll see the ribbons around our community. On Fridays there’s Denim Day and you can wear denim on Friday. And if you take a look at our Facebook page and also our Instagram page, we have all kinds of social media posts about awareness and what survivorship means.”
