Where the New York City Wellness Crowd Goes to Chill

They say New York is the city that never sleeps, the beating heart of the cultural and business worlds — and frankly, it's easy to see why. With acclaimed museums and art galleries, coveted shopping, and celebrated restaurants, bars, and hotels, the Big Apple truly has something for everyone, whether you're visiting for a weekend or are a seasoned local.

But as anyone who's experienced the constant hustle-and-bustle of New York City knows, with so many high-energy happenings, stress, exhaustion and burnout aren't always far behind. As it turns out, the city that never sleeps could really use some R&R.

Luckily, some of the country's very best wellness retreats are located in and around Manhattan — from secluded getaways in the Hamptons and cozy cabins upstate to traditional spa weekends in Massachusetts and sprawling outdoor spaces in the Vermont countryside. Every wellness need and desire can be satisfied with just a hop, skip and a jump from the booming center of New York (and the right budget, of course).

Read on to discover the best wellness retreats and destinations in and around the city (with current nightly and per-package prices), and the offerings that are winning over even the most discerning travelers.

Fourteen years after it first opened amidst the sunny beaches of Malibu, Calif. and made a big splash in the world of wellness travel, The Ranch now has a second property in Hudson Valley, just an hour's drive from New York City. The retreat's programming mirrors that found at its West Coast home: lengthy two- or four-hour hikes in the mornings and afternoons spent doing yoga, strength training and enjoying a daily massage.

But the Hudson Valley version has one notable departure to cater to the busy schedules of East Coasters: It offers efficient three- and four-night programs instead of Malibu's seven- and nine-day stays. (Because yes, New Yorkers even like their relaxation to be expedited.)

The Ranch's 40,000-square foot estate sits atop a sprawling 200 acres, which invite guests to enjoy the outdoors in every season, be it paddle boarding in the summer or tobogganing in the winter.

Rates range from $2,575 (double occupancy, low season, three nights) to $6,900 (single occupancy, high season, four nights).

There's perhaps no name more synonymous with wellness travel than Canyon Ranch. A decade after launching its first location in Tucson, Arizona to immense success, Canyon Ranch opened its Berkshires property in 1989. For the better part of the last 35 years, the resort has established itself as a top destination for busy New Yorkers looking for a moment of reprieve, but it's remained a favorite in recent years by incorporating a wide range of modern and high-tech services.

When they're not indulging in an array of spa treatments, guests of the 126-room hotel can participate in more than 30 daily mind-body activities, like cooking classes and dance, or try their hand at the Ropes Challenge Course and outdoor adventures, such as hiking and paddle boarding. The property also boasts 100,000 square feet of fitness, including a running track, tennis court, cycling and fitness studios, cardio and weight rooms, and both indoor and outdoor pools.

Canyon Ranch Lenox can be booked on a per-night basis or as a 'Pathway' experience, which over the course of three, five or seven days allows visitors to work towards a specific intention through a curated itinerary.

Two-night retreats begin at approximately $1,400 per night.

Miraval, another longtime wellness destination that began in Tucson, Arizona, remains one of the most sought-after names in health-conscious travel — and its Berkshires property is no exception. Nestled in a bucolic corner of Massachusetts, the resort draws inspiration from its peaceful surroundings and leans into the rich history of the 1894 mansion at its center.

Miraval has a distinct focus on giving guests the chance to unplug, but the digital device-free environment still has plenty of activities and programming to fill your time there. Upon booking, guests are invited to set an intention, determined through a quick quiz, and can work toward it during their stay through a wide selection of experiences, including equine meditation, archery, a ropes course (with the signature "Leap of Faith"), painting classes and a sensory silk cocoon.

And of course, no trip to Miraval would be complete without a visit to its Life in Balance Spa, where you can choose from a manuka body peel, reiki, a crystal body massage, a probiotic facial and more. In addition to the one-, three- and five-day intention journeys, the resort offers a handful of packages, which enable guests to take advantage of certain offerings, including a Miraval Day Package for those looking for a condensed getaway.

Nightly rates begin at approximately $750.

The Hamptons may not be an obvious destination for wellness, but Water Mill's Shou Sugi Ban House is proving otherwise. Inspired by the Japanese principle of wabi-sabi, which focuses on acceptance of the imperfect, the intimate hotel offers a holistic approach to nutrition, fitness and wellbeing.

With 13 freestanding 'studio' rooms scattered around the property — each complete with a gas fireplace, indulgent bathtub and heated bathroom floors — as well as a six-bedroom private residence, a stay at Shou Sugi Ban House really does feel like a stay in your own home.

The resort hosts complimentary daily wellness activities, like Ashtanga yoga classes and sound & meditation, and its hydrotherapy and thermal suites and watsu pool are open to guests throughout the day.

Shou Sugi Ban's spa offerings are something to write home about, with a complete menu of massage and bodywork treatments as well as custom facials, healing rituals and nutrition consultations and workshops.

Perhaps what sets this Hamptons destination apart more than anything else, however, is its impressive culinary program. Designed in collaboration with Michelin-starred chef Mads Refslund, every dish served at the property is made with market-fresh ingredients, including some from onsite gardens, and crafted to bridge wellness and sustainability, not to mention deliciousness.

Three-night retreats begin at approximately $5,325 for single occupancy and $4,688 per person for double occupancy, depending on time of year.

No one has conquered the realm of luxury fitness quite like Equinox, so it seemed only fitting that the brand took on wellness hospitality a few years ago, opening its first hotel in the Hudson Yards neighborhood of Manhattan — and boy, has it delivered.

Despite its location in one of the busiest cities in the world, Equinox Hotel offers all who walk through its doors some deeply restorative rest. In fact, rest is one of the core tenets of the property, which features a Sleep Well Menu of rest-promoting foods and drinks, a signature temperature-regulating mattress and a range of AM and PM rituals, like a detoxifying MLXi3Dome treatment, a sleep-inducing IV drip and a CBD massage.

While a stay at Equinox Hotel can be booked nightly, much like a standard hotel, guests can also select a three-day Curated Stay informed by an in-depth personal health assessment and designed to help you unlock your full health and wellness potential.

Nightly rates begin at approximately $1,000.

Set atop 300 acres of Vermont countryside, Twin Farms is designed to be your home away from home. Stay in a traditional, spacious guest room, or opt for a suite in the Farmhouse at Copper Hill, a secluded cottage, the two-suite lodge, or one of the property's new treehouses tucked into the woods.

In the warmer months, guests can hike, swim, canoe, kayak, play tennis or pickle ball and even enjoy a tour of Twin Farms' honeybees. During the winter season, they can ice skate, sled, Alpine ski, Nordic ski, ice fish and go snowshoeing.

The resort's Furo, a cedar-clad, Japanese-inspired bath house in the woods, and Bridge House Spa are available year-round, where visitors can enjoy complimentary fitness classes or book a rejuvenating treatment.

Nightly rates begin at approximately $2,800.

Located just a stone's throw from New York, the Mayflower Inn & Spa, in true Connecticut fashion, oozes with charm and sophistication. The Auberge property has been a favorite for quiet weekend getaways since it opened, but thanks to a recent partnership with The Well, it's now a top wellness destination, too.

Bringing the Manhattan spa and wellness sanctuary to the beautiful surroundings of New England, The Well at Mayflower Inn is the ideal countryside holistic health retreat: Guests can enjoy various movement classes, such as yoga, barre and pool conditioning throughout their stay, not to mention an impressive menu of spa and wellness treatments, like an acupuncture facial, Thai massage and even a reviving bath soak in the comfort of your own room.

The Well is open to all Mayflower Inn visitors, but those looking for a more intense stay can attend one of the signature retreats, which happen throughout the year and are led by acclaimed healers, thought leaders, creatives and industry experts.

Nightly rates begin at approximately $600.

It's tough to think of any Hudson Valley hotel that overflows with history quite like Troutbeck. Located on a 250-acre estate, it's served as a private home, country inn and tavern since the 1700s and has been a favorite retreat for some of America's most distinguished thinkers and creatives for centuries.

Visitors can walk in the footsteps of Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau, Sinclair Lewis and Lewis Mumford, and even Justice Thurgood Marshall and Theodore Roosevelt and draw inspiration from the property's beautiful surroundings just as they did.

Troutbeck's Barns play host to a full range of wellness services and amenities, including candlelit yoga, family astrology readings and meditation, as well as private spa treatments, like acupuncture and massage. Guests can also play tennis on the hotel's two U.S. Open courts, which sit atop a 15-acre pasture at the foot of Oblong Mountain, or take in some sun at the mid-century pool, while the surrounding areas offer endless opportunities for hiking, skiing, biking, horseback riding and more.

Nightly rates for the wellness retreat package begin at approximately $500.
