Although it felt like the metallic trend of last year may have reached saturation, chrome-everything is still very much everywhere this year. For example, silver accessories and mixed metals are more popular than ever, and sparkly chrome eyes are one of spring’s biggest makeup trends. We’d wager that the obsession for molten metal is here to stay through summer, especially when it comes to nail trends. The latest celebrity to take a stab at the trend is Katy Perry, who paired a shiny new manicure with an equally reflective look.

This is just the latest in a long line of fun, cutesy nail looks for Perry. Late last month, she showed off a sweet daisy manicure, and early in January, she showed off a similar chrome mani.

The Inspiration

On April 16, the star posted a series of shots on Instagram of her metallic outfit for American Idol. Her metallic top was shaped like a shark, which Perry confirmed on Instagram. “If you see a shark, you’re left-brained. If you see #idol tonight, you’re my bestie,” she wrote in the post caption, referencing her campy 2015 Superbowl Performance that included viral dancing shark. Her metal look was equal parts mermaid and space age.

The Manicure

Along with her Space-siren-meets-Mermaidcore outfit, Perry wore a matching chrome manicure and wet-looking glam. Her nails were done by artist Diem Truong, who created the almond-shaped, reflective silver style.

The Hair and Makeup

Perry also rocked a millennial side part and the wet hair trend, showing off her beachy waves and shiny long locks in the process. The overall effect looked as though Perry had just walked out of the ocean: Her cheeks had an aquatic sheen highlight, and her eyeshadow was a soft bronzey look with touches of glitter accents, courtesy of makeup artist Michael Anthony.

Eager to try the chrome nail trend? Perry's shiny manicure is the perfect inspiration.
