The first night of Battles for Season 25 of The Voice kicked off with coaches Reba McEntire, John Legend, Chance the Rapper and Dan + Shay pairing up their teams for sing-offs which determined which artist goes through to the Knockouts and which one goes home.

This season the Playoff Pass is back – and each coach gets just one, which means while one of their artists will go into the Knockouts, the other will go straight into the Playoffs.

And then, of course, each coach also gets one Steal to take someone from another team to join theirs.

Battle Round 1: Bryan Olesen vs Nathan Chester from Team Legend

Song: " “Rolling in the Deep”" by Adele

Winner: Nathan Chester

John said: “Bryan vs Nathan, two powerful vocalists. I chose Nathan because he’s incredible. I couldn’t see him going home. Nathan’s voice is so powerful. He sings with such passion. I loved the melodic choices he was making and I have a feeling both of these guys are going to go far.”

It was a double Steal: Reba and Dan + Shay both pushed their buttons. Dan said, “We were not going to let a voice like that leave the show,” but he was interrupted by John pushing his Playoff Pass button, saying, “I’ve had enough.”

Playoff Pass: Bryan Olesen

John said: “Bryan got the highest honor I could give to anybody on my team. Bryan is such a pro, such a superstar vocalist, but he hasn’t had that huge break I feel he deserves. I feel he can win The Voice. He’s so good."

Battle Round 2: Karen Waldrup vs Ryan Argast from Team Dan + Shay

Song: " “Save Me the Trouble” by Dan + Shay

Winner: Karen Waldrup

Shay said: “I was blown away by Karen and Ryan. Ryan made this a very difficult decision but, in the end, I feel that Karen has the stuff to be able to win this show. Her charisma and stage presence are very impressive. You can tell that she’s cut her teeth for many years and really knows how to work a room. I feel that Team Dan + Shay is stronger because of Karen. Let’s see where she elevates next.”

Battle Round 3: Tae Lewis vs L. Rodgers from Team Reba

Song: “We Don’t Fight Anymore” by Carly Pearce and Chris Stapleton

Winner: Tae Lewis

Reba said: “Tae vs Elle was incredible, but Tae needed to move forward because he’s a country singer but he’s also very soulful and I think he can sing anything. I think he’s going to do great in the Knockout rounds.”

Chance tried to Steal L. but he was stopped by Reba pushing her Playoff Pass button.

Playoff Pass: L. Rodgers

Reba said: “I only get one Playoff Pass and I thought L. was worth it. L. has a beautiful voice but it’s not only her voice, it’s her attitude. It’s her stage presence. So, she gets to skip the Knockout rounds and go straight to the Playoffs.”

Battle Round 4: Gabriel Goes vs Kamalei Kawa’a from Team Chance

Song: “Over the Rainbow” by Israel Kamakawiwoʻole

Winner: Kamalei Kawa’a

Chance said: “It was really tough choosing between the two, but I think Kamalei was a little more dedicated to the lyrics and had a grasp of the song. I love Kamalei’s voice. It’s so smooth but it also feels intentional, and he has something to say every time he opens his mouth. I think he has a lot more to say.”

Battle Round 5: OK3 vs Zoe Levert from Team Legend

Song: “The Bones” by Maren Morris

Winner: Zoe Levert

John said: “I think Zoe was under the gun. Zoe was going against a trio, but Zoe came out and just sounded like she was the lead singer and she nailed it. Zoe sounded confident, her voice sounded pure, her tone was inviting. She won it on the stage where you’re supposed to win it.”

Battle Round 6: Alyssa Crosby vs Asher HaVon from Team Reba

Song: “We Don’t Need Another Hero” by Tina Turner

Winner: Asher HaVon

Reba said: “I wanted to keep both of them, but I had already used my Playoff Pass, so it was a really tough decision, but I had to choose Asher. His voice is incredible, his style, his stage presence, he’s got the whole package. Asher has a good chance of winning.”

Steal: Alyssa Crosby

Chance said: “I stole Alyssa because she was going neck and neck with somebody who has a natural, God-given talent. When you can pull that out of yourself, that’s the quality of a star."

The Voice airs Monday nights at 8 p.m. ET/PT and Tuesday nights at 9 p.m. ET/PT on NBC, and streams next day on Peacock.
