Weekend Break: Mother’s Day brunch at Tanta in River North

CHICAGO — On Grand Avenue in River North, you’ll find Tanta Traditional Peruvian Restaurant.

“I would describe it as very diverse, very colorful and very flavorful,” Chef Gee said.

Chef Gee’s curated menu will take guests on a culinary tour inspired by Japanese, Chinese, Spanish, African and Italian influences.

“The city level for Peruvian cuisine is much higher but it is also balanced with the aji so while people think it’s going to be super spicy, it really isn’t,” Gee said.

The restaurant makes the most of its rooftop with a series of events, including Mother’s Day Brunch and Peruvian Independence Day.

“We showcase fun entertainment with DJs and bottomless mimosas as well,” Adriana Gonzalez, assistant general manager, said. “This month we are going to launch our monthly themed brunch. We’re going to do a disco-themed brunch and a Peruvian Afro-Latin theme in honor of Independence Day on July 28th.

In the main dining area, you’ll find their cebiche bar.

“You’ll have the best fish and dressed with lime juice,” Gee said.

Their menu also includes well-known classics, like eggs benedict, salmon, halibut, empanadas and tres leches cake but with a twist.

“Brunch is where we have some traditional dishes and we could also play around a little bit,” Gee said. “So you’ll find our picarones, which is our Peruvian donut. We also can do a French toast. Ours is inspired by Peruvian flavors and I do a little pisco in the strawberries.”

Brunch begins at 11 a.m. on weekends and they open at 5 p.m. on weekdays with happy hour.
