“Wedding Gowns Through the Decases” is an exhibit of elegant, jaw-dropping, wedding-dress inspired cakes featured at this week’s Cake International competition at Alexandra Palace in London — and an awe-inspiring contender created by world-renowned Emma Jayne Cake Design is one for the ages. This life-size confection is generating tons of buzz, and, well, it clearly takes the cake at this year’s competition (OK, we’ll stop laying on the puns so thick!).
Emma Jayne Cake Design re-created a stunning bridal gown by couture designer Mak Tumang, and results had tongues wagging and onlookers confused about whether they should be shopping or salivating. The gray-and-pink organza ball gown features floral appliqués throughout the bodice and skirt, and, frankly, looks edible in its original form, so it must have been a natural for the cake designers. Tumang told Yahoo Style he is “so thrilled and thankful that they made my design as inspiration for the Cake Show.”
The out-of-season stunner is no longer available on Tumang’s website portfolio, but it’s selling for 30 percent off on third-party websites like DHGates. The dessert version of the dress is a dead ringer for its original wearable design — so much so that it’s hard to differentiate the two in pictures. “I saw this beautiful dress yesterday. Well done,” said one Facebook fan who had seen the work up close and personal. “OMG!!!!!!! This has to be THE most beautiful cake I’ve ever seen EVER!!! Such immaculate detail, all those flowers all that work …… wow,” another fan commented on Cake International’s Facebook, where it racked up 1,000 likes.
“We were beyond thrilled to be able to include such an amazingly crafted piece of sugarcraft, based on such a stunning an memorable dress design,” Bethan Hopkins, Communications Executive at ICHF Events, which runs the event, told Yahoo Style. “The amount of work and craftsmanship that has gone into creating the price has been unreal — including simply transporting the price to London! The standard of exhibit we see at CakeInternational events simply gets higher and higher every show — we can’t wait to see what comes next!”
In order to create the couture cake, artist Emma Jayne herself used a prototype for the innovative dragéekíss cake-decorating tool to nail the finer points of the intricate design, such as the individual application of pearls. In honor of its use at Cake International, the dragéekíss brand is offering its tool at a limited-time discount — four for the price of three, which is £29.85 (almost $31) — on its online FundRazr page.
Also featured at Cake International’s display — which is alternately being marketed as “Wedding Gowns Through the Decades” — are impeccable tabletop reproductions of elaborate wedding gowns. Emma Jayne’s masterpiece, though, takes the front and center spot at the display — it’s essentially the showpiece of the competition.
Emma Jayne’s other notable and eclectic cake designs include impeccable floral designs, cakes that realistically replicate a Michael Kors bag, and even a sugar-sculpture recreation of a character from Disney’s film Avatar. Her wedding dress cake debuted at the show on Day 1, April 22, at 11 a.m.
Cake International hosts the world’s largest cake competition, says its website. “Open for anyone — of any age and experience — to enter, this competition has launched baking careers and is truly the heart of Cake International,” the site boasts. “If you love cake decorating and cake art, then join us and take part in a competition that celebrates the ever-evolving skills and creativity of cake decorators across the globe!” The company calls Jayne’s creation “one of the most beautiful cakes we’ve ever seen.”
Yahoo Style reached out to Emma Jayne Cake Design — which produces “Bespoke Wedding Cakes and celebration cakes for any occasion,” according to its Facebook page — for comment on how long it takes and what’s involved in creating a cake of this caliber, and which ingredients are used, but we have yet to hear back. We assume Emma is exhausted from concocting and displaying this show-stopping cake — and rightfully so.
No word either on whether Emma Jayne’s creation took the top prize at Cake International’s competition, but it’s definitely No. 1 in our book.
