Video: Looking Back on Barron Mamiya's Ride to Victory in Pumping Pipeline Surf

The North Shore's Barron Mamiya finished last season ranked 12th in the world. He won the Lexus Pipe Pro with a perfect 10 last month thanks to his backside barrel riding skills parallelled only by a select few other local Pipe surfers.

The Championship Tour rookie took the win against two-time world champ and Pipe Master John John Florence in pumping surf. At the moment, he's tied with Jack Robinson as world #2 while Florence remains in first.

Since then, we've seen Mamiya celebrate his win by partying like a rock star drop a sick new edit. In the edit below, Britt Merrick and Brent Power from Channel Islands surfboards talk about the team's approach to Pipeline this winter.

Channel Islands captioned the edit above:

"Our Field Notes series continues with hosts Britt Merrick and Brent Power: This time, following Barron Mamiya’s Pipeline Pro victory, which started off the 2024 WSL Championship Tour season with a bang! Riding a one-off custom Britt had shaped him, Barron took out the most coveted event win of the year.

"This episode documents the run from Pipeline through Sunset Beach and also features other riders such as Imaikalani deVault, Parker Coffin, Lakey Peterson, Matt McGillivray, Alyssa Spencer, Cam Richards, Ewe Wong and Mason Barnes. Britt also shares that the infamous board from 'Thicker than Water' is making a comeback."

Opening the video, Power says to Merrick:

"The Sunset CT has just finished, which also means it's the end of our Hawaii season. And what a Hawaii season it was. Let's just kinda go back to when we first got here. It feels like a lifetime ago."

From there it's about 20 minutes of chatting about team riders and their boards. Lots of dims, lots of shop talk, and a lot of insight into what goes into competition from surfers and shapers alike.
