Video: A Crew of Big Wave Surfers Charge 'Rugged' Mavericks

The surf world zeroed in on Pipeline for the last week as pros on the North Shore for the Lexus Pipe Pro took advantage of the perfect surf.

Day one of the contest kicked off on Wednesday, marking the start of the World Surf League's 2024 Championship Tour season.

But as all eyes were on Pipeline, surfers in California were focused on legendary big wave spot, Mavericks.

Powerlines Production posted the footage above, and in the caption said:

"Some footage from Thursday's tow session, between storms, at Mavericks , Ca."

Opening the video, big wave surfer Luca Padua—who surfed Mavericks for the first time at 13 years old—is checking the surf in 40 to 50 mile and hour wind, and says:

"February first is supposed to be large, again. Rugged, again.

"We're waiting out a storm. Quite on brand for the 23-24 El Nino season, where I feel like anytime anyone asks me how the surf is going to be this year, I got one answer and it's 'rugged.' Rugged will be the theme of the season and it's ongoing."

Padua came down to "get the boots on the ground" and "touch the magic" hoping to surf the next day.

Despite the storm, Padua and big wave legend Peter Mel, feel confident.

"There's no doubt in my mind that it's gonna be rough and challenging but we're up for it," he says. "Hopefully tomorrow we'll get another window, another shot at it."

And they do.
