Vet Shares Top 6 Healthy Toppers to Add to Dry Dog Food

It must get pretty boring to eat the same thing over and over again every day. If your dog eats dry dog food, you can make them think they are getting a treat by adding healthy food toppers to it. Veterinarian Amir Anwary shared a video at the beginning of May offering up six healthy toppers you can add to your dog's food.

Dr. Anwary says in his caption that these foods will add vitamins, protein, antioxidants, and Omega 3 to your dog's meals. You can mix and match them once a day or at each meal. Bonus points because most of them are probably in your kitchen all of the time!

Dr. Anwary recommends these six toppers: blueberries, boiled chicken, raw eggs, sardines, cucumbers, and bone broth. I think the only one that isn't in my kitchen right now is sardines. I was also excited to see cucumbers on the list because they're growing in my garden right now! He also clarified the benefits of each food: chicken - protein; bone broth - many vitamins and minerals; cucumber- vitamins, minerals, fiber; sardines - Omega 3 fatty acids; egg - proteins and vitamins.

Other Food Toppers to Put on Dry Dog Food

There are so many healthy foods that you can add to your dog's dry dog food or just give them as a snack, and many of them actually help keep your pooch’s teeth clean. One of my dog's favorites is strawberries; did you know that strawberries have enzymes that help keep a dog’s teeth white! Dental hygiene is really important to your dog's healthy and even more important as your dog ages. Some dog breeds are more predisposed to developing dental problems than others, which is why offering them healthy foods to keep them in tip top shape should be a priority.

Carrots are great for their teeth, skin, and coat. I give my dog a carrot every day - she loves gnawing on it because she's teething right now, and it soothes her sore teeth and gums. Carrots are also great because the rough and fibrous texture of them basically scrub your dog's teeth like a toothbrush. Others yummy foods to consider include celery, apples and watermelon (all deseeded). Feed your pup all of these in moderation; some of them are high in sugar and can cause your dog to gain weight.

All of the foods mentioned here are veterinarian approved and doggy delicious. Not all foods in the kitchen are healthy for your dog, though. For example, onions, garlic, chocolate, and caffeine are toxic to dogs and should never be given to them. If you're unsure about whether or not your dog can have a particular food, a quick call to your vet to find out could save their life.
