Vegan Ice Cream Recalled Because of Pen Pieces
The saying goes "we scream for ice cream" but this ice cream likely had consumers actually screaming.
Food Safety News reports that Berkeley, Calif. vegan treats company Eclipse Foods is recalling its Caramel Butter Pecan pints because it may contain ink pen fragments. Yes, you read that correctly.
The recall, which was announced by the FDA, was initiated on June 30 and is still ongoing.
The Eclipse Foods site lists the ice cream as sold out. However, it still appears as available for purchase on Washington-based grocery chain Haggen's site. It's also listed on West Coast grocery chain Vons' site.
The ice cream was sold in Delaware, Illinois, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, and Washington, D.C. Those who have purchased the ice cream recently should be on the lookout for these details: 14 fl oz. cup, UPC: 810049270490 Frozen, Lot #: MC00923041, and a "Best By" date of 2/10/2024.
Those who still have the ice cream in their freezer should dispose of it immediately.
Pens are somehow not the wildest inedible fragment found in sweet treats this summer. On July 21, Trader Joe's announced that rocks were found in the store's beloved Almond Windmill Cookies, which includes the Trader Joe's Dark Chocolate Chunk and Almond Cookies.
Trader Joe's also recalled its Unexpected Broccoli Cheddar Soup for being possibly contaminated with something that is certainly unexpected: insects.
Needless to say, you should do your research before going grocery shopping this summer—just to be safe!
