‘Variety’ Put a Variety of Powerful Women on Its Covers

The one common link between Lena Dunham, Kim Kardashian, Glenn Close, Whoopi Goldberg, and Rachel Weisz—aside from fame, fortune, and being female? They’re all charitable! Also, they’re all on the covers of Variety’s seventh annual “Power of Women” New York issue.

Variety picked the five stars for their willingness to bring attention to worthy causes: Goldberg is an honorary chair of Figure Skating in Harlem, Kardashian donates her time and belongings to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and eBay, Close volunteers at Fountain House and started the mental health nonprofit Bring Change 2 Mind, Dunham supports Girls Educational & Mentoring Services (which helps victims of commercial sexual exploitation), and Weisz, along with her husband Daniel Craig, is involved with Opportunity Network, which helps needy kids get into and graduate from college.

Plenty of celebrities are charitable, but it’s not often that they get recognized for it in such a public setting. It’s nice to see some of these women—cough-Kim-Kardashian-cough—landing on the cover of a magazine for something genuinely good and selfless for a change.

Not to mention, the cover photos, themselves, are more up close and personal than we’re generally used to seeing on the newsstand. When was the last time you saw wrinkles, age spots, and—gasp!—pores on a mag? It’s truly refreshing.
