Vail's Wilmot Mountain Pauses Operations Starting Today

Vail's Wilmot Mountain, the family oriented resort near Chicago in the Midwest, is pausing operations to maximize snowmaking potential.

Other resorts have also been making this tough call recently, including California's June Mountain.

"We see winter temps in the forecast! We are going to pause operations, starting Monday, December 18th to maximize snowmaking temperatures and conditions."

It all checks out. Yesterday, my friend and I skied on an unopened trail by Gold Coast at Palisades (unknowingly, swear!) and a ski patrol kindly informed us that the more people ski unopened terrain, the longer it takes to open.

We then shared a great chairlift ride back up with him after, which was surprisingly more fun than awkward.

Sometimes, tough calls need to be made for the greater good of the resort.

Wilmot officials are exercising a bit of utilitarianism, perhaps.

However, on the bright side, officials announced, "We will share our re-opening date as soon as we have that information. Real-time resort operations details can be found on the My Epic App and on our website."

"Keep thinking cold! We will have you back on the slopes before you know it!"

Snow comes, even if it comes (sometimes) slower than we would like.

Things are looking up. Resorts that delayed initial openings have now opened for the season, such as Mt. Hood.

Hopefully soon, Wilmot will join them.
