Here’s some updates and safety tips for those attending Festival International

LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY)– As you all get ready to head to Downtown Lafayette to enjoy Festival International festivities, here’s some updates and safety tips to ensure you’re getting the best festival experience.

It takes an entire year to plan Festival International to make sure everyone has a fun and safe time this weekend.

“Come out with an open mind and be ready to take a trip around the world with us,” Carly Viato, the marketing director for Festival International, said.

Festival International is a vibrant five-day celebration showcasing a rich tapestry of cultures through music, art and cuisine. It unites individuals from around the globe as well as those within Acadiana, fostering a sense of community and appreciation for diverse culture expressions.

“We welcome musicians from near and far, food vendors and art vendors,” Viato said.

The special celebration draws in approximately 300,000 visitors. Viato, attendees should be aware of new updates, such as transportation arrangements.

“Downtown does get rather packed,” Viato said. “I suggest trying to park at the public parking over at UL health and sciences. It used to be at the Cajundome. We do offer a free festival shuttle and it takes you to all of the info.”

Festival goers can easily find the map on website to help navigate and ensure a fun and enjoyable experience.

“Be sure to take advantage of the app and the mobile app,” Viato said. “You can find anything festival related in that.”

Last but not least, there are a few request from the festival team.

“No pets, no ice chest,” Viato said. “You can bring your lawn chairs just try and leave some space.”

Another convenient feature this year for park goers is the wristband system. Unlike in previous years where you had to preload a certain amount of money onto the wristband, now you can link your account directly to the wristband allowing you to seamlessly purchase food, beverages and festival merchandise.

With the large crowd expected for the weekend, it’s all hands on deck for Lafayette police and emergency personnel.

“There will be officers at the festival from open to close and afterward,” Ashley Wood with Lafayette police said.

Fun is a must but safety comes first.

“We have medical stations set up for patrons to go to. We want people to be aware that it will be a large crowd of people. If you do get seperated from your group make sure you have a designated meeting area to meet up with each other.”

Wood urges festival goers to stay with a group, park in well lit areas, lock your doors, don’t keep any valuables in sight and do not drink and drive.

“If you are going to drink do not drive,” Wood said. “Have a designated driver or to use a rideshare program.
