Unique Freeskiing Event Returns Later This Month

Bobby Brown's brainchild event, Red Bull Cascade, is back for another season. It will be held later this month between March 29th and March 30th at Solitude Mountain Resort in Utah.

The event is a funky twist on the usual park skiing competition. It boasts a mile-long course with a mix of slopestyle and all-mountain features that runs top-to-bottom from Powderhorn II to Main Street. If you're struggling to visualize what that looks like, check out the video embedded above.

Brown designed the course, which a team of builders led by Charles Beckinsale—a world-renowned terrain park designer—will construct.

Competitors will be scored on five criteria as they blast down Solitude's piste: Creativity, Speed, Choice of line, Difficulty, and Energy (Style/Flair).

While it's hard to categorize an odd duck like Red Bull Cascade, I think of it as a marriage between the Freeride World Tour and X-Games slopestyle, borrowing elements from both ends of the freeskiing spectrum.

Red Bull Cascade's eclectic nature extends to the list of invited athletes who, according to a press release shared with POWDER, range from "Olympians" to "hometown heroes."

Known invited athletes include Bobby Brown, Gus Kenworthy, Blake Wilson, Grace Henderson, and Svea Irving.

Adding to the event's unique status is a fresh spin new to this season. Instead of competing individually, competitors will work in teams, creating an avenue for collaboration rarely seen in competitive freeskiing events.

"The decision to adapt the event into a team-style competition really stemmed from seeing the camaraderie and collaboration that occurred amongst all the athletes last year", says Brown. "And at the end of the day, that is what Red Bull Cascade is all about."

Spectating is encouraged with a viewing area outside Solitude's Last Chance Lodge. Be there or be square?
