The title a Bakersfield woman prayed for: ‘Mom’

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Lindsay Long has to wear many hats throughout the day.

Full-time business owner, loving wife, and mom.

Though this is a lot to juggle, Long wouldn’t have it any other way. She and her husband struggled with infertility for six years, until a miracle happened.

“I know the struggle of what it’s like to want to be a mom and to yearn for that, to wake up wanting kids of my own. I had nieces and nephews, my friends all had kids, that was something that I really longed for,” mother and business owner, Lindsay Long said.

She now has three beautiful children, but that didn’t come without resilience along the way.

“I just think it’s really interesting that I’ll be 40 this year and I’ve kinda hit all of the markers that a lot of women deal with or may identify with as a mom. I struggled to get pregnant and have a baby — I went that route for a long time,” said Long. “I had two babies close together…and we lost a baby at 16 weeks a couple of years ago and that was super traumatizing for me. To have two miracle babies back to back in my late thirties and then lose a child just out of nowhere you know?”

A few months later, came another miracle.

“Josie… she almost died. We almost lost her in childbirth. She had the cord wrapped around her neck several times and she was purple. It took a while for me to hear her cry and then they took her to the NICU so my plans of having a natural childbirth went away… I had to have an emergency C-Section,” said Long. “This whole idea of motherhood, I think we compartmentalize it you know? You always want it to be perfect… whatever your story is the best story.”

With online fads and the image of the “perfect mom” on social media, Long’s message is that you’re perfect the way you are.

“Being a mom can be so hard. I feel like one minute you’re going this way and then the next minute you’re going another way, they’re puking on you when they’re sick and you’re not sleeping,” said Long. “There’s all those things out there that you have to be the perfect image but be who you are. Pick the things that are important to you. For me, that’s spending time with my family.”
