If you've ever worn two sports bras to keep your breasts in place while training, you know the struggle of having large breasts. But, there's no need to live through that misery anymore. If you have a sports bra that's specifically designed for high-impact or high-intensity activity, bouncy boobs should be yesterday's problem.
Whether you have a large chest, saggy breasts, or small boobs, a high-impact high-impact sports bra is a must for everyone (yes, even if you have DDD boobs!). And, their technology has sure come a long way over the years. From creative construction and technology that cuts back on bounce to designs that keep you comfy (no more too-tight-to-move constriction!), big brands like Amazon, Brooks, and Lululemon, as well as smaller labels like Knix and Superfit Hero have found some seriously innovative ways to make sports bras less tight and more comfortable than ever before.
Take a sneak peek at the best high-impact sports bras:
For example, many brands now design based on the understanding that your boobs don't just bounce up and down when you run, jump, or twist. They actually move in a sort of figure-eight, often bumping into each other. “You don't only need support underneath your breasts for running, but around the sides and in between,” explains Joanna Griffiths, founder of the brand Knix.
Before choosing the right sports bra for you, there are some things you should know.
How do you know if a sports bra is high-impact?
When 'high-impact' is used to describe exercise, it typically means your body is hitting something with a lot of force. For example, running or jumping can both be considered high-impact activities. During a high-impact move, you're likely jumping, twisting, or bouncing around, which means your breasts probably are, too.
Meet the experts: Calyn Brooke is a certified personal trainer based in Scottsdale, Arizona. Joanna Griffiths is the founder of the brand Knix. Barbara Ebersberger is Reebok’s vice president of performance apparel.
A high-impact bra can act as extra support to minimize some of that bounce. For women with larger chests, they may even be useful for low-impact or low-intensity activities, too, says certified personal trainer Calyn Brooke.
Which bra is best for high-intensity workouts?
Since everyone is built differently, picking the best high-impact sports bra will vary from person to person. “This is truly based on your own size and comfort,” says Brooke. She suggests trying out a few to see what works best for you, and testing them during high-impact activity versus everyday wear. But, here are a few key attributes to keep in mind while shopping:
Encapsulation and compression
These two features are your best bet for keeping everything in one place through any type of workout—because if you’re moving in all directions, your boobs will be, too.
Adjustability in the shoulder straps and bottom band will allow you to customize the best fit for you. You'll be able to play around with the bra's sizing to make it tighter, looser, or more spacious based on how you feel.
Bras labeled as S, M, L, and XL are not as reliable as cup sizes. Cup sizes will allow more specificity when it comes to how your bra fits you. For example, if your cup size is smaller than your bra size, or vice versa, you’ll be able to find the bra that fits just right for you.
Those thin, wispy ones just won’t do when you’re turning up the burn. But wide straps or those that cross in the back may offer more support, shares Barbara Ebersberger, Reebok’s vice president of performance apparel, who has an inside look at how sports bras are designed.
Comfort and Breathability
A pool of sweat is never fun to sit in during or after a workout. Ensuring your bra is made of materials that are quick-drying, breathable, and help keep leftover sweat at bay is key for comfortability. This often means searching for bras made with ventilation and moisture-wicking or quick-drying materials. Of course, a fabric that feels nice when you touch it is a must, too, according to Griffiths.
Below, WH editors dive into the 14 best high-impact sports bras for every need.
This signature high-impact, sweat-wicking bra from Lululemon, which is a favorite of WH news editor Currie Engel, is designed to look sleek, thanks to its round neck and strappy design in the back. It also has a soft underband that won't dig into you as you work out. Both this style and the super high-impact option often run out fast on the site, but the Run Times Bra ($68) is another great option for major support.
Plus, this and the high-impact style are suitable for a wide range of breast sizes from "B" to "DDD" cups.
Rave Review: "So often sports bras get so uncomfortable after a while. This is so comfortable and supportive that I bought three for work and two for running!!"
This bra has it all—adjustable straps, a hook-and-eye back closure, sizes ranging from 32A to 42G, and smooth, soft material. That means this bra will help you check all your boxes for a comfy workout.
The brand also uses its patented Tri-Flow ventilation technology, which increases airflow where your body gets the hottest (aka right between your breasts).
Rave Review: "I've been looking for a new running bra since the one I loved for years was discontinued. A friend recommended the Catalyst and I'm glad she did. It's comfortable, easy to get on and off, and it has zero bounce (I wear a 32E and run daily)."
Spot Comfort Sports Bra
This wireless bra offers top-notch support, while using molded cups to flatter your natural shape under tank tops or t-shirts. It's a top-rated buy on Amazon among people who love its wider band size and soft, comfy shoulder straps.
The Women's Health team also loves that it comes in a variety of fun colors from bright pink to royal blue. The shades are so cute, you can wear them alone while you're out for a jog (no tank necessary).
Rave Review: “I often find it hard to find a workout bra that provides great support, but this one gets the job done. I don’t feel like I am falling out and I like the wide bands on the sides.”
Brooks launched this series of sports bras, called the Dare Collection, after spending nine years researching and developing the technology used to reduce bounce and help women run faster. And, the reviews prove that women are loving it. One even wrote that she wishes all bras were made like this one.
This style is incredibly soft with its sweat-wicking, ultra-smooth fabric, which reduces chaffing and digging. It's so supportive, some reviewers say it got them through an entire marathon without any pain or drooping.
Rave Review: "I love this bra. I also loved the previous style, but the straps were a tiny bit short for me. This new version is better—maybe because the sliding straps allow it to adjust to each individual?"
If underwire bras are your preference, look no further than this super comfy, moisture-wicking version. The racerback bra is made with soft, breathable fabric and mesh to keep you cool and comfy.
Our one and only disclaimer: this bra tends to run a bit small, so be sure to size up, if needed. Trust, you surely don't want any boob slippage while you run.
Rave Review: "I am a 60 year-old woman who works out regularly—I run, bike, lift, hike, and play several sports. I have naturally large breasts that need full support, especially when running or horseback riding. This is my new favorite bra."
Limitless High Sports Bra
This bra seriously pulls its weight in comfort and support. It features adjustable strap length and style (U-shaped or crossed) and a quick-dry, water-wicking material that lets your skin breathe.
Aside from all the bells and whistles, reviewers love this bra for its fit and subtly-molded cups. They provide distinct support to each boob so people with different-sized breasts love this one (yup, it's totes normal).
Rave Review: "I was really hoping not to like this because it’s the most I’ve ever paid for a sports bra. Sadly/happily, it’s also the most supportive and comfortable sports bra I own, and now I want more!"
Ultimate Sports Bra
This is like the Swiss Army Knife of sports bras. The straps are really adjustable (you can add up to 15 extra inches) and convertible (so they can be worn in an "H" or "X" style). The front zipper also makes this bra easier for women with large breasts to get on or off. The zipper guard also protects against chafing during wear, so you don't have to worry about your skin rubbing up against the edge of the zipper (thank goodness!).
Rave Review: "This sports bra is the best ever! I do HIIT and the high-impact bra holds everything in place with the most comfortable support. I love that the straps are adjustable."
There's nothing worse than a sweaty sports bra that sticks to you during your workout, but this one avoids that hassle completely. Featuring water-wicking technology and a soft performance stretch fabric, comfort is at the forefront of this bra.
While many high-impact sports bras can feel super tight, this one feels light around the chest without slacking on support. Some people have even worn this bra to hot yoga, which speaks to its breathability and lightweight feel (because who wants to feel constricted in a hot room?).
Rave Review: "This might be the most comfortable and supportive sports bra I have ever owned. It seriously fits perfectly, supports tremendously, and is so comfortable. The material is soft and the color is perfect!"
Butterluxe High Neck Bra
On the hunt for a high-neck tank and supportive bra in one? This Amazon favorite will be your right hand. Plus, it features removable pads to hold your boobs in tight and keep them in place during workouts or when you're just on the go. Reviewers use this bra for all sorts of different activities from yoga to pilates, but some love it for running, too.
PSA: If your boobs are on the bigger side, try looking for something else with adjustable cup sizes and tight straps to hold the girls in.
Rave Review: "I’ve bought three different colors! These shirts are so flattering to your figure with high-waisted leggings or shorts. My favorite workout and running errands tanks."
Power Play High-Impact Bra
Engineered to provide full support to any bust size, this bra can hold the girls in like no other, and it looks cute while doing so. The fabric dips underneath the breasts for that flattering, ultra-snatched look, too.
One reviewer, whose a size 43DD, loves wearing this bra during her dance classes, as she says it's suited for high-intensity movements. She adds that this is one of the first styles she's found that's actually suited for movement.
Rave Review: "I love this bra. I’ve gone through multiple bras, multiple known brands, and have not been happy. This is now my go-to for running. The fabric, the fit, the support, the size—it’s the perfect bra for me.
Racerback Sports Bra
Carrying sizes "L" through "7XL", Superfit Hero is the go-to athletic-wear brand for inclusive sizing. It boasts a longline design for extra coverage and support whether you're lounging around the house or engaging in medium or high-impact movement. When you wear this bra, you don't have to stress about dreaded lumps and bumps showing through your shirt or, worst of all, nip slips (dun, dun, dun).
Rave Review: "This is the first sports bra I've found that manages to provide enough support for bouncy workouts, while being comfortable enough to just wear around the house. I love that the band doesn't sit right under my boobs."
Zip Front Sports Bra
No more stretching out your bra by pulling it over your head—this one zips up to make life easier. It also holds the girls in place to keep bouncing to a minimum during high-intensity workouts.
One reviewer loves this bra because it doesn't ride up around her back fat. "Surprisingly, the shoulder straps don't dig deep into the skin, either," she writes. She recommends sizing up if you want this bra to fit a bit looser, and not hug your chest super tight (although some runners like that snug feeling!).
Rave Review: "This sports bra is comfortable and supportive. Having the zipper makes it way easier to get out of it! There is some uniboob, but that's typical of a sports bra. So far, this is still my favorite of sports bras ever."
Experience the power of mesh support with this sports bra, which keeps the breasts in place during harder workouts (and looks super nice while it's at it!). It also does an amazing job of smoothing out the back area so you look sleek and tight in your workout clothes.
One WH editor loves wearing this bra by itself, as the back of it is super cute to show off at the gym. It's also ultra-smoothing so you don't have to stress about any fat spilling out when you're least expecting it (who can relate?).
Rave Review: "This is hands down the best sports bra for large chested girls! The support is amazing, and the bra is also cute and offers full coverage."
