There's a Major First for Women at the 2023 VMAs

The MTV Video Music Awards are back tonight, and for the first time ever, every single nominee for Artist of the Year is a woman. The nominees are Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, Doja Cat, Nicki Minaj, Karol G and Shakira.

The VMAs are being held at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, and will be emceed by Minaj, who is repeating the role she shared with Jack Harlow and Lil Wayne in 2022.

Many of the women nominated for Artist of the Year have all enjoyed banner years so far.

In terms of nominations, Swift leads the pack with a whopping 11. In addition to Artist of the Year, she's nominated for Song of the Year, Best Pop, Best Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Visual Effects, Best Editing, Show of the Summer, Song of the Summer, Album of the Year and Video of the Year. Swift and Beyoncé have also both enjoyed enormously successful tours—perhaps you've heard?

Not to be outdone, Shakira is being awarded the Video Vanguard Award. She'll also perform a retrospective of her hits at the show.

What's more, Karol G made history in February 2023 when she became the first woman to have an all-Spanish language album at number one on Billboard's Hot 200 chart. How's that for impressive?

The VMAs will air tonight on MTV starting at 8 p.m. ET. Additional performers include Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion, Lil Wayne, Olivia Rodrigo, Doja Cat, Kelsea Ballerini, Demi Lovato and more.
