The Messy Bun Goes Glam: Master Fall’s Easiest Hairstyle

With the days getting shorter (and colder), I know I’m not the only one looking for a way to cut a few minutes off my morning routine and spend a little more time under the sheets. As someone who already spends a limited amount of time on my hair, I knew I could easily cut back on it even more. This is where the messy bun comes in. This isn’t the post-gym look of your school days, this deconstructed bun was inspired by the hair at the 2015 Isabel Marant show, and manages to feel glamorous even though it only will take you a few minutes to master.

Hairstylist Deycke Heidorn created the look you see here using only two key products: a styling mist and a hair screw. Start by applying your styling mist at the roots of your hair using your fingers and then brushing through using a wide tooth comb. Heidorn recommends Salon Grafix Protein Shaping Stylist Mist ($7). “This creates a polished look and adds dimension to your hair without making it look too flat and sleek,” she says. Next, pull all of your hair back at the middle of your head (the crown and the nape create very different looks) and secure with a hair tie. Next, create volume and a little texture by braiding hair roughly before wrapping it into a bun. Now, grab your hair screw (Heidorn likes the pins from Screw Your Hair and Goody) and twist it through the center of the bun until it disappears. These screw pins eliminate the need for a massive amount of bobby pins and depending on how long your hair is, it’s likely that you’ll only need one to keep your hair securely in place. Finish the look by loosening the bun, pulling out a few ends, and misting with a light hair spray (try Amika Touchable Hairspray, $20). Go ahead and hit snooze tomorrow morning.
