Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift made an interesting confession to her fans during the second night of her Eras Tour stop in Melbourne, Australia.

The "Bejeweled" singer was in the middle of the speech she usually gives the audience before singing her song "Betty" during the folklore era of the show, when she talked about what it was like making the whimsical 2020 album.

Swift, who wrote folklore during the COVID-19 lockdown, called herself a "lonely millennial woman covered in cat hair drinking her weight in red wine," during the time she wrote the album, which seemed to be a strange admission since she was believed to be in a happy relationship with now ex-boyfriend, Joe Alwyn, at the time.

One Swiftie found it "crazy" that Swift would've described that time in her life that way, considering she was in a long term relationship with the man who inspired her Lover album just one year earlier. "it should tell y'all it all," that fan insisted in a post on X.

"The way this clicked for me too," someone else agreed. "Lonely and drinking away her sorrows when she was literally living with her long term boyfriend."

Others did try to cut Alwyn, 32, some slack, while noting that Swift could have just been lonely because of the worldwide pandemic, which forced people to be isolated from friends and family for months. The singer, 34, also had to cancel her Lover Fest tour scheduled for summer 2020 because of the COVID-19 outbreak.

"I think that was an isolating time for a lot of people," one X user pointed out. "I think she missed her friends and us the fans too."

But Swifties have been second-guessing so much of Swift and Alwyn's ever since they called it quits, especially now that the 14-time Grammy winner has dropped hints that their relationship may not have been as dreamy as it once seemed.

Swift recently released one of her most scathing breakup songs ever, a track titled "You're Losing Me," which we now know was written in 2021, in the midst of her relationship with Alwyn (thanks for that, Jack Antonoff.)

Swifties largely believe she wrote the song about the downfall of her love story with Alwyn, which means they might have been having trouble long before their breakup became public news.

Her upcoming album, The Tortured Poets Department is also heavily expected to be about her split from Alwyn, with songs like "So Long, London" and "The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived" on the track list for the album—also written two years ago, Swift herself admitted.

Hopefully, fans will be able to put more pieces of the puzzle together when The Tortured Poets Department officially drops on Friday, April 19.
