Taco Bell Is Reviving an Iconic Klondike-Brand Ice Cream Dessert

Taco Bell is bringing back a beloved, discontinued Klondike treat. Along with Portland-based ice cream makers Salt & Straw, the fast food chain is reviving the Choco Taco. Plus, they’ll be offering a variety of chocolate sauces and an exclusive new dip with the treat.

The new Choco Taco is more of a reimagination of the classic than a simple remake. The original Choco Taco featured a shell made from waffle cone, filled with vanilla and chocolate-swirled ice cream, and topped with peanuts and chocolate sauce. The new treat still features a waffle cone shell dipped in chocolate, but the traditional ice cream has been swapped for cinnamon ancho chile ice cream and it’ll be flecked with toasted brown rice as opposed to peanuts.

The two brands are also partnering on exclusive chocolate dipping sauces for the revitalized Choco Taco. Flavors like chocolate chili and mango jalapeño bring the dessert a bit of spice, while the cinnamon wild berry brings a little more sweetness to the table. The Choco Tacos will also be served with a cheesecake dip, if the dessert wasn’t rich enough already.

Salt & Straw announced the creation on Instagram, promising followers that the treats would be available by the summertime. An exact date was not specified. The revitalized Choco Taco will be available at all 25 of Salt & Straw’s locations throughout the U.S., and is available online for nationwide shipping.

Klondike’s elimination of the Choco Taco in 2022 was met with startling resistance online. To this day, the company offers a special hotline for those who want to “share feedback on the discontinuation of the Choco Taco.” The furor was so intense that Klondike announced they were planning to bring the dessert back to the market.

"We knew the Choco Taco was a fan favorite, and the decision to discontinue the product was a tough one to make," Klondike said in a 2022 statement to People. "The overwhelming support for Choco Taco has certainly made us reconsider our long-term plans."

However, the company isn’t planning an imminent return. "The team is working on a plan to bring it back, though it may take some time,” they said. “There are currently no definite timelines for bringing the Choco Taco back."
