Tabby Cat's Weird and Hilarious Nighttime Ritual Is Totally On-Brand

If you're a cat parent your cat probably has some weird little quirk or ritual that they have to perform that makes absolutely zero sense to you. We once had a cat who stole an olive off a plate and then carried this olive around in its mouth screaming the entire time, and the olive, since it was wet from his mouth, would get all dusty and nasty and he'd scream until we gave him a new clean olive he could carry around and play with. Typical cat!

One cat owner has a cat who has to do the same thing every night at the exact same time and it's just adorable proof that cats are all such cute little weirdos.

The hilarious video was shared by the TikTok account for @hisnameistoby and Toby's owner explains, "We have to do this every single night at 10:30 PM sharp. He demands that I take him all the way to the very bottom of our apartment stairs and he just sits? He sits for at least 45 minutes every night.Sometimes we sit so long the lights shut off. I think he would sit forever if he could, he only goes up when a neighbor comes in, but sometimes he doesn't and I have to carry him. I never showed him this, one day he just wanted to go sit in the stairs and we've done it ever since."

TikTok users are loving this little ritual and one person commented, "Cat enrichment is my favorite cause why they just wanna stare at a wall until they decide they are done I love them." Another added, "My cat randomly decided a shovel on our balcony is his water bowl so now he won't drink inside at all and just yells at the door so he can get his shovel water." One other person replied, "Mine does this with the bathroom sink she will YELL until I go watch her be in the sink. She could stay there for hours demanding me with her."

Probably the best explanation comes from another person who said "I saw a video once explaining that cats just see us as bigger more useless cats, and take it upon themselves to show us how to be better cats."

Makes sense to me!

Why Do Cats Do Weird Things Like This?

If you're a cat owner, you've probably called your cat a little freaky weirdo at some point or another. Cats are weird! It's one of the reasons why they make such amazing pets.

Whether they are sitting in the sink for hours watching a faucet drip, hiding in any cardboard box they can find, dragging something twice their size around the house, or stealing socks from the laundry basket (yes, this happens) our cats can sometimes become obsessed with doing the same weird behavior all the time.

Like the cat who has to sit with his owner at the bottom of the stairs every night at the exact same time.

Cats are creatures of habit and thrive on routine. They feel secure and comfortable when their environment is predictable and consistent. Repetitive behaviors, such as following the same daily routines or performing certain actions at specific times, help cats establish a sense of security and control over their surroundings. This cat may feel like it's their job to patrol the bottom of the stairs every night.

It could also be marking its territory, because cats have scent glands located on various parts of their bodies, including their paws and cheeks. He could be saying hey this is my spot and checking on it to make sure no other animals have tried to claim it. Or it could be like another person said, his new job is being the lobby man.

At the end of the day it's these weird things that cats do that make them so fun and fascinating. We may never really understand why they are such weird little freaks, but that's one of the reasons all of us cat parents love them so!
