There is an unspoken rule about living in a cozy home: The need for boxes never ends. You need them to move in and to move out, of course, but these containers are also vital to the chapters in between. Boxes keep items in place and ensure clutter doesn’t take over every available surface. They make necessities easy to find, and tuck less important things away. In other words, storage containers share the responsibility of keeping your life in order — or, at least they do for me.

I use storage containers in nearly every room of my home. The only reason I can claim to be even somewhat minimalist is because there’s always a box to hide things in. And when it comes to finding budget-friendly, stylish storage boxes that are on 24/7 display, I’ve found that one big-box store does them best: Target

Target dedicates an entire aisle in its home section to storage boxes and baskets, and there’s another section in its office department for desk options. Even more decorative box offerings are scattered throughout the store. What I like most about many of Target’s in-store options is that aesthetics are balanced with function. So if you want to use a box to make a design statement, you can. From bohemian and mid-century to neutral and cottagecore, there’s a box to fit every style, and none of them will require that much cash to buy. Here, check out my personal Target box picks for living comfortably — especially in a small space.

This large storage box is a perfect size for a wide nightstand, desk, or bookcase to hold items that you want within reach but otherwise out of sight. The color and leather detailing will be perennially on trend, too.

With a width of 16.5 inches, this open-top basket is the perfect solution for corralling shoes in an entry (or, in my case, keeping magazines all in one spot). The braided detailing provides a subtle texture as well as a hardiness for everyday use, and the handles are handy if you want to move it around your home at all.

This surprisingly substantial marble storage container could be put to good use on a bathroom vanity. But it also works well on a coffee table or bedside table for odds and ends.

While these storage boxes are sold as kids’ items, feel free to ignore that — I did when it came to organizing my closet! These boxes can keep seasonal items out of the way on a top shelf, and the fabric has a cottagecore vibe that’s more interesting than a solid shade.
