A determined and focused Marley, a surfing Corgi, rides a wave at the Brevard Humane Society 12th Annual East Coast Dog Surfing Festival at Lori Wilson Park in Cocoa Beach, held Easter Sunday, 2024. His display of skills earned him First Runner Pup in the competition. Sammie, a Chihuahua Dachshund, took First Place.

The surf was up and the pups were stoked at the 12th annual East Coast Dog Surfing Festival at Lori Wilson Park in Cocoa Beach.

Corgi Marley's display of skills during the Easter Day canine competition earned him First Runner Pup honors along with Photo of the Week accolades at FLORIDA TODAY. Sammie, a chihuahua dachshund mix (that, by the way, is a "chiweenie"), ruled the waves and took top dog accolades.

The event, which benefits the Central Brevard Humane Society, "is always a fun and unique event for a good cause," said FLORIDA TODAY photojournalist Tim Shortt, an animal lover whose pet pics are always winners.

"This year, the competition was heated, and the crowd was cheering them on like they were pro athletes. I captured this moment of Marley at 1/1250th of a second with a median telephoto shortly before he had to bail off of his board from the wave crashing down."
