The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 Release Date Confirmed

A sequel to 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie is currently underway.

The news came on March 10, otherwise known as Super Mario Day 2024, with video game developer Nintendo and animation studio Illumination announcing the new Super Mario Bros. Movie is officially in development.

If there was any film that was always going to get a sequel, it’s this one. The first is the second highest-grossing movie of 2023, making $1,361,972,248 at the global box office and becoming only one of two films to crack a billion dollars (Barbie is the other).

“We are now working with the folks at Illumination on a new animated film based on the world of Super Mario Bros,” says Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto in a YouTube video.

“We're thinking about broadening Mario's world further, and it'll have a bright and fun story. We hope you'll look forward to it!"

This suggests the new movie will introduce new characters from the sprawling world of Nintendo, like Mario’s arch-nemesis Wario, or his faithful mount Yoshi.

Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri appeared in the video and confirmed the Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 release date: April 3, 2026.

While plot details are under wraps at this point, we do know directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic are returning.
