Sullivan East High School hosts Life Skills Day for students

BLUFF CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) — Sullivan East High School students learned valuable tips and tricks at the school’s “Life Skills Day” on Tuesday.

Classes were broken into different topics, such as kitchen safety, first aid, personal safety, job interview prep, applying for a loan, tying a tie and more.

Sullivan East Principal Andy Hare said graduation is in 16 days, and they want students to be fully equipped to take on challenges in the real world.

“We got around as a staff and sort of thinking of all the things that we wish we would have known,” Hare said. “And we put them together and got members of the community to come out and show the students the things that we struggled with, and hopefully it’ll help prepare them better whenever they get out to the real world.”

Hare said a lot of the skills being taught during the event apply to things people don’t think about until they happen.

“So when they see this, they’re like, ‘Oh, well, now I know what to do whenever that happens in the future,'” Hare said.” Because some of them have experienced some of these things. They may have had a blowout on the road or they’ve had a flat tire, not know what to do, or they’ve had a fender bender and didn’t know what to do first.”

Around 200 seniors attended various classes taught by community members during the Life Skills Day event.

“I’ve told our students since they entered in here their freshman year that they’re going to be around more people that care about them and love them now in these next four years than ever before,” Hare said. “But when they leave, it’s on their own. And so we want to make sure they’re prepared.”
