Insomniac Games, the development studio behind the recently released Spider-Man 2, has been the victim of a ransomware attack, and huge swathes of stolen data have been released online by the hackers responsible.

The hack was first publicized by Cyber Daily, which revealed that the developer had been hit by a ransomware attack. At the time, limited data including personal documents, screenshots of upcoming games, and internal emails and communications between Insomniac staff.

It was reported that the group responsible for the hack was auctioning off the data for $2 million, but the price asked of Insomniac and parent company Sony was not disclosed. The group said on December 12, 2023 that if the price asked of Sony was not paid, it would release the data publicly, and unfortunately that seems to have happened.

Over a terabyte of stolen data belonging to Insomniac was uploaded online, filled with a host of details about upcoming games from the studio, developer timelines, internal communications and documents, personal emails and identification, and more. This is in addition to plot details for upcoming games, details for canceled titles, and reportedly even an early playable build of one upcoming title.

Neither Insomniac Games nor Sony have yet to comment on the release of the data, although when the hack was first publicized, Sony acknowledged the attack via a spokesperson with the following statement:

"We are aware of reports that Insomniac Games has been the victim of a cyber security attack. We are currently investigating this situation. We have no reason to believe that any other SIE or Sony divisions have been impacted."

Insomniac Games recently released the PS5 exclusive Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, which was met with great reviews and sold over 5 million copies in just 11 days.

The success of the title prompted fans to wonder if Daredevil would be coming to Spider-Man 2, as the game had references and easter eggs to the blind superhero. Many also wondered if Spider-Man 2 would be getting a Venom spin-off game, due to some of the sequences that play out in the game, where Venom is one of the primary antagonists.

Insomniac’s next big Marvel game is set to be based on Wolverine and could feature Spider-Man, as it was said by Spider-Man 2 creative director Bryan Intihar that the upcoming game will take place in the same universe as Spidey. The title was teased back in 2021, but is not expected to be released for quite some time.
