Upcoming Wolverine Game Might Feature Insomniac’s Spider-Man

Insomniac Wolverine game

Spider-Man 2 just released on the PS5 – to good reviews at that – but many fans are already thinking about the future for Insomniac’s Spider-Verse. There’s already been talk of a potential Spider-Man 2 Venom spin-off game, but one thing we know for sure is that Insomniac is hard at work on a Wolverine game. Now, we know these two projects might have more in common than originally thought.

In a recent Kinda Funny spoilercast, Spider-Man 2 creative director Bryan Intihar revealed that there is a small possibility that Insomniac’s Spider-Man could turn up in Wolverine. According to Intihar, Wolverine will take place in Earth-1048, the Marvel universe that contains Insomniac’s Spider-Men — Peter Parker and Miles Morales.

You’d think, then, that it might have been a fun idea to have Wolverine make a brief cameo in Spider-Man 2, much like Miles was briefly playable in the original Spider-Man for the PS4. Intihar says that Wolverine’s absence wasn’t an error or a time issue, but a deliberate choice.

“There was a decision not to do it,” Intihar said, “There was a decision not to do it. I think, for us, we wanted to let that team cook. And who knows what the future holds? But right now, let’s let them do their thing.”

This isn’t the first time that staff on Spider-Man 2 have dropped hints about Insomniac’s upcoming Marvel game. Spider-Man 2 director Ryan Smith told us collaboration is key for the upcoming Wolverine game, saying that it’s because Insomniac works so closely with Marvel that its games turn out as well as they do.

Spider-Man 2 core tech director Mike Fitzgerald let something similar slip when telling us how Spider-Man 2’s New York got bigger and better. In GLHF’s interview with Fitzgerald, he said that “some parts of Spider-Man 2 will find their way into future games,” but stopped short of actually naming Wolverine as one of those games.

Insomniac’s Wolverine doesn’t have a release date or even a release window yet, but given Spider-Man 2 is done and dusted at this stage, we think it’s likely we’ll start hearing more about it in the coming months and years.
