Sophie Turner doesn’t know what VSCO girls are, but she hates them

The markers of a VSCO girl are confusing to the untrained eye — and even Sophie Turner, in all her internet-savvy glory, is no exception, unable to recognize a VSCO girl dead giveaway — in this case, saying or typing “sksksksksksk” to denote laughter —when it stared her in the face.

If you don’t know what you’re looking for, you too might turn a blind eye to VSCO girls. Scrunchies and water bottles aren’t that hard to come by in the wild, after all. But make no mistake, the trend is infiltrating the internet!

Is your sister a VSCO girl? Your Gen Z intern? The 14-year-old you used to babysit with a hyper-curated Instagram feed and questionable outfits? Behold, the VSCO girl:

So we’re with Sophie on this one: they’re annoying by definition. A few of their favorite fashion items are decidedly cool when done properly, though. Here are our favorite VSCO girl-approved items:

Scrunchies

If you’re showing forearm skin, you’re doing it wrong. For VSCO girls, the more scrunchies you wear — on your arm, or in your hair — the better.

These are made from recycled fabric — VSCO girls are all about saving the planet (turtles, mainly — hence their reusable water bottles and straws).

Puka shell necklaces

VSCO girls want their love for the ocean to be extremely evident, so puka shells get the job done. But it begs the question, what is the mass production of puka shell necklaces doing to the ocean? VSCO girls didn’t read into this one. If you want to be a responsible VSCO girl, buy your puka shells from somewhere that’s transparent about their sourcing.

Big tees

Oversized graphic tees are a VSCO girl staple that just says “I’m like, so laid back sksksk.” Comfort is key, so we ship this trend. Look for a vintage tee if you want to save the turtles, or something.

Birkenstocks

Kendall Jenner loves them, VSCO girls love them, we love them. These classic slides are comfortable and have never gone out of style.

So please keep your sksksks to yourself (and far, far away from Sophie Turner), but don’t be ashamed of your armful of scrunchies. Oh, you don’t have one?
