Buckle in: Kendall Jenner’s Birkenstocks have set off on a worldwide tour. We first saw the model wearing the crunchy-comfy shoes right after New York Fashion Week. At that time, she sported the humble cork soles with a pair of nubby socks. And it seems that Jenner’s weary feet still need the soft, supportive touch of that full-grain leather. Today, she stepped out for Milan Fashion Week sporting the sandals again but this time sans socks. Like her Birkenstocks, the rest of Jenner’s look was also plucked out of a liberal arts college campus: an oversized rugby shirt, a pair of simple faded jeans, and square sunglasses. The only non-university addition here was the white Prada bag.
The homely sandal, beloved by gardeners and literature majors alike, has slowly been rearing its platypus bill silhouette for several years now. Who can forget when they appeared with colorful fur lined footbeds on Phoebe Philo’s Celine runway back in Spring 2013? (The models looked like they were walking on clouds of cotton candy.) In 2017, Birkenstocks had its own show at Paris Fashion Week. Dark fashion lord Rick Owens also collaborated with the footwear label, coating the straps in floss-thin cashmere fur and painting the body in a black varnish. Just this past New York Fashion Week, Proenza Schouler sent a model down the runway wearing heels but holding a slick leather pair of Birkenstocks at her side. But truth be told, judging by Jenner, the Birks look better on the feet than off.
