Sophia Loren has been hospitalized after a severe fall caused several broken bones.

The accident took place in the bathroom of the Italian actress' Swiss home on Sunday, Sept. 24, prompting the need for emergency surgery to address her medical condition, which consisted of fractures to her femur and hip, according to a source who spoke with The Hollywood Reporter.

The source added that there is "cautious optimism about the outcome of the operation and Loren’s recovery," which will include a "short convalescence" followed by a "long rehabilitation."

The initial news of Loren’s fall was announced by a restaurant she was set to open in the Italian city of Bari on Sept. 26—the fourth such restaurant bearing her name. Additionally, she was set to receive honorary citizenship from the city, however, all her planned engagements for the foreseeable future have been canceled at this time.

Just days prior, Loren celebrated her 89th birthday on Sept. 20, and earlier this month, the Sunflower star attended an Armani fashion show held during the 80th Venice Film Festival in her last public appearance before the fall.

The actress’ sons, Carlo Ponti Jr. and Edoardo Ponti, the latter of whom also works in film, are reportedly by her side at the hospital as she recovers. Edoardo directed Loren in her most recent movie, the 2020 Netflix feature The Life Ahead, which won her a David di Donatello Award for best actress, while Carlo is a musical conductor. The Two Women actress was also the subject of 2021 Netflix documentary, What Would Sophia Loren Do?

The 89-year-old shares both of her children with former husband, Italian film producer, Carlo Ponti Sr, who passed away in 2007 of pulmonary aspiration.
