Somerset Lake trail work approved

Apr. 26—SOMERSET, Pa. — A Fayette County company was awarded a contract to continue work on Somerset Lake's loop trail.

Mills Excavating, of Vanderbilt, submitted the lowest of 11 bids to add more than a quarter-mile of new trail to the project.

It's an important leg of the path, given that it will allow hikers and cyclists to access the trail from an area set to become a recreation hub this summer, trail coordinator Cathie Beal said.

The section will run past the board launch and a soon-to-be added kayak rental facility, which also will include a concession stand, she said.

That piece of the project was previously approved last month.

Mills Excavating's successful bid — which was approved Tuesday — was $115,225 for the new work.

That includes the new trail development and additional site clearance near the trail head and future multi-use pavilion, Beal said.

The pavilion itself is planned to be added in 2025, she said.
