Social media skin care trends affecting teens

FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – Skincare experts are warning about an increased interest by the preteen population for unnecessary skin care treatments due to a rise in social media trends.

Board Certified Dermatologist at the Valley Skin Institute, Dr. Rohini Shantharam said just because skin care trends are popular they are not always necessary in young teens.

“There’s been a rise in this concept of creams and products that are being marketed for the tween population,” she said. “Which consists of harsh exfoliant acids retinol and peptides, which can be harsh to the skin.”

The trends are popular but she said not needed for teens with young skin. She said young people’s skin still has the ability to regenerate and any additional treatments have no added benefits.

The rule of thumb for this age group she said is to keep things simple— gentle moisturizer, gentle cleansers are all that is needed.

“If they are protecting their skin from now on with the simple sunscreen that they find that they can put on in the morning, that’s really all they need to be doing,” she said. “SPF is key to all that accumulated ultraviolet light you get through the course of your life that puts you at risk for skin cancer later on.”
