A Snow Groomer Tumbled 1,300 Feet Down a Resort Slope In Switzerland

The driver of a Pistenbully snow groomer was left in critical condition Monday when the machine rolled over and tumbled 1,300 feet down the mountain at Glacier 3000, a resort in eastern Switzerland. The 35-year-old driver was reportedly taking the plow back to its garage when it tipped over for reasons still unknown, throwing him from the cabin along the way as it tumbled it’s way some down the glacier in a terrifying accident.

Rescue workers found the man with “life-threatening injuries” and he was transported to the hospital by a rescue helicopter. While resorts tend to have a village at their base, Les Diablerets is actually the closest village to Glacier 3000 where the Pistenbully driver was flown to. In 2023, nearly 300 tourists were airlifted from Glacier 3000 to Les Diablerets when a cable car broke down. That process reportedly took as much as three hours.

The cause of the accident was still under investigation, according to a press release from the Vaud cantonal police.

“The duty prosecutor has opened an investigation to determine the exact circumstances of this accident. The investigations were entrusted to investigators from the mountain platoon of the Vaud gendarmerie,” they announced. “This event required the engagement of a patrol from the gendarmerie mountain platoon, another from the traffic unit, the Diablerets rescue column, mountain rescuers from the station and a helicopter, from Air Glacier and one from REGA.”
