Skier Stan Rey Earns Unofficial "Tomahawk Of The Day" Award At FWT Kicking Horse

Pro skier Stan Rey billygoats down to what appears to be a 30 foot cliff. He barely pauses, and without so much as a second thought, sends it onto the fresh slate below.

It almost looks like it's going to work out. And then, the explosion. He tomahawks 6 full cycles before finally slowing to a halt.

This was captured in the form of a vertical video, as he was competing in the Freeride World Tour at Kicking Horse, BC, Canada (the sixth largest North American ski resort).

The comp went down on the T1 South face, which had a firm base with a fresh layer of pow. The temps were cold, with lows pushing -20 °C, but that kept the snow at a higher quality to run the stop of the tour.

POWDER reached out to Rey for comment on the explosion. “I thought the landing was gonna be a lot firmer like the rest of the face, so I was ready to 4 point stomp on the 10cm on ice, but where I landed it was a one inch breakable crust to faceted sugar. I got swallowed up by it, and 6 tomahawks later I was the crowd pleaser. Sucks to suck. Ha.”

When asked how he’s feeling afterwards he said, “Very sore but all good.”

The results culminated in Max Hitzig once again taking first, making Max Hitzig (GER) now two for two. Max combined a deep straight air into a 360, finishing his line with multiple drops towards the bottom.

Oscar Mandin (FRA) came in second, showing off multiple, massive airs and a backflip to seal the deal.

Marcus Goguen (CAN) backed up his second place here last year with a third place this winter.

The Freeride Tour always has some wins and some losses. When you're trying high risk, high reward tricks, they can't all work out. But, as Stan says, it makes for one of skiing's most entertaining shows.
