Ski Coach Shares Deceptively Simple Carving Tip

The ski season's finally getting underway at ski resorts throughout North America, and do you know what that means? Fundamentals, fundamentals, fundamentals.

Getting wild is for the mid-season. Dialing in the basics, in contrast, is the perfect way to spend a day riding the white ribbon.

Here's Ski Dad TV with an essential tip to improve your carved turns.

I hear ya. Why should I trust this guy?

Joe, the man behind Ski Dad TV, is an ex-racer and full-time ski instructor at Deer Valley, Utah. And, as evidenced by his videos, he really knows how to bend a ski. In short, the guy rips, so listen up.

I don't know about you, but this tip from Joe kind of rocked my world. I came of age as a skier when freestyle was all the rage. Thus, I didn't spend too much time thinking about my turns. I was satisfied if I got from point A to point B without having a yard sale. Plus, I usually rode a pair of boats that didn't lend themselves to laying down a mean arc.

But after watching this, I had an epiphany. After 20-odd years of skiing, my technique might be horrendous—at least in comparison to Joe. It's not a devastating thought, though. The idea that I could go skiing and have something to work on without throwing myself off cliffs is exciting.

Your turns, it turns out, are worth examining. Here's to a season full of tight carves and pulled radiuses.
