Dozens Of Skiers Caught By Deep Powder In "Jerry Of The Day" Clip

What do you get when you mix unprepared skiers with a low-angle powder run?

Yardsales and a lot of unhappy bootpackers.

Here's proof via a clip from snowboarder Mellissa Baake.

This video was filmed at Solitude Mountain Resort, Utah, last weekend. The resort benefitted from a recent snowstorm, which, apparently, proved difficult to navigate for large portions of its clientele. I've never seen this many skiers stuck on one run.

Powder-laden greens are deceptive like that. Sure, they're less imposing than their blue and black counterparts, but they'll get you if you let off the gas and lose momentum. And once you're stuck, you're stuck.

Admittedly, my gut reaction to this video was wondering how these beginners got themselves in so far over their heads. However, after a bit of reflection, I remembered all the times that I, too, got stuck in powder and had to dig myself out.

And these instances weren't decades ago when I was first learning to ski. Last season, during my first proper powder day of the year, I tried to make a turn in powder—yes, just a turn—and immediately went over the handlebars. As I meekly skied down my friends after my muck-up, I remarked, "I think I forgot how to ski pow."

It was true. I'd spent so much time skiing boilerplate that I couldn't handle soft snow.

I came away from that moment with a valuable lesson: Hero snow—particularly in its heavier varieties—doesn't always make you feel heroic.
