Shamrock, Pensacola's green-furred golden retriever, has gone viral

Pensacola may be known for its emerald green beaches, but what about its shamrock green puppies?

A TikTok video of Shamrock, a green-furred golden retriever puppy, has taken the internet by storm after it was shared by Carole DeBruler, co-owner and dog breeder at Golden Treasures Kennel, located right here in Pensacola.

DeBruler, who spoke with USA TODAY, says that Shamrock may be a little smaller and greener than her siblings, but she's a princess at heart.

"Even though she looks different, she is healthy, she's happy," said DeBruler.

Green puppies aren't normal, right?

Yes and no.

DeBruler and her husband, who have nearly 20 years of experience breeding dogs, said that this isn't the first time they've seen a green tint on a dog.

"For light-colored dogs, it's not uncommon to have a greenish tint or some green on a dog," said DeBruler. "But it usually comes right off."

Shamrock, now 8 weeks old, is still green, though some of the tint has faded.

"With Shamrock it did not go away," said DeBruler. "The mom cleaned her up, we washed her up and it turned this vibrant lime green."

DeBruler believes the puppy was born green because she was exposed to biliverdin in the womb. Biliverdin is a bile salt that stains puppies.

Shamrock goes viral

"Little Shamrock was born lucky," began the first TikTok video featuring the green pup. The video shows Shamrock and her siblings clamoring over each other as they feed.

It was first posted on March 26 and has since received 8.2 million views, over 701,000 likes and over 2,000 comments.

Commenters didn't waste time making light-hearted jokes and references.

Some joked that Clifford has a new rival, others referenced Green Puppy, a recurring minor character from the Nickelodeon show Blues Clues and more recommended renaming Shamrock to Elphaba, a reference to Elphaba Thropp, more commonly known as the Wicked Witch from the West, the protagonist in "Wicked."

Is Shamrock up for adoption?

Anyone looking to adopt Shamrock is out of luck. The green pup has already been adopted, according to DeBruler, and is now waiting to be old enough to go home with her "furever" family.
