A senior dog who spent 11 years in an overcrowded Alabama animal shelter got some much-needed good news.

In March, 13-year-old Fergie moved to Wisconsin, was placed in a spacious foster home, and renamed Fiona. After several weeks in her new state, Fiona was adopted by a family on Friday, April 5.

According to a Facebook update posted by Albert's Dog Lounge, a foster-based dog rescue service that helped coordinate Fiona's move to Wisconsin, "Fiona found her happily ever after."

"After 11 years in the shelter, she now has a FURever family of her own!" the shelter wrote alongside photos and videos of Fiona with her new owner.

When Fiona arrived in Wisconsin in March, she was placed with Lindsey Decker, the vice president of Albert's Dog Lounge, until she found a permanent place, local outlets WECT and WMTV reported.

In her temporary home, Fiona had other senior dogs to interact with and several acres of yard to explore — a far cry from the shelter where she had spent over a decade of her life.

According to WCAX, Decker reviewed several adoption applications before deciding on Fiona's new family. After going through her checklist — which included finding a family who was often home, had a fenced-in yard, and owned other dogs — she selected the Saskowski family, who, according to the outlet, previously adopted two dogs from the rescue service.

"I saw her story online and was just so overwhelmed with sadness that she was in the shelter for so long," Carrie Saskowski told WMTV and WCAX. "And no one would adopt her knowing how sweet she was."

She added, "It was just so sad to me, and I thought, oh my gosh, could we have the best life together."

Fiona's new home includes a "glorious yard, dog siblings, [and] pet parents who are just going to love her and give her the best last years of her life," Decker told WCAX, adding she "couldn't be happier" for the canine.

In a comment on Albert's Dog Lounge's Facebook update announcing the adoption news, Saskowski wrote, "We already love her and will take the best care of her," further cementing this happy ending for Fiona.
