You Can Send Your Name to Mars on NASA's Next Flight

If you've always dreamed of being an astronaut, well, we have some exciting news. While you might not be able to join the next flight into outer space, your name could. By making a reservation with NASA, you will be able to have your name sent to Mars on their next mission. So, what does that mean, exactly?

It's a fun gimmick to get people interested in space and to pay attention to the missions. The last time NASA invited people to send their names was in 2020 for the Mars rover mission, and a whopping 11 million people signed up.

How did the names get to Mars? A placard was installed on the Perseverance Mars rover which contained a microchip of all 11 million names. That's a lot of names!

If you missed the past mission, no worries. There is always a new mission in the works. In fact, the next mission is scheduled for sometime in the mid-2020s. You can make a reservation now at NASA's reservation page.

And there is no cost to register and send your name. All you have to do is fill out the form with your name, location and email address. Once submitted, you will receive a commemorative boarding pass and will earn frequent flyer miles when the mission is complete.

The spacecraft for the next mission hasn't been identified yet but you will get updates as the mission gets closer through your email. You will also be informed of events like the launch and the landing.

And, don't forget about your boarding pass! Once you retrieve your pass from the boarding pass page, you can either print it off for framing or embed the HTML code of the pass onto your blog or social media so that you can share your boarding pass for others to see.

You will also earn frequent flyer points and an account will be established with the first mission you put in a reservation for. This is where NASA keeps track of all of the missions you have sent your name on. The points are just a way of tallying up all of the missions you participated in. You can go to the frequent flyer page at any time to check your progress.
