Chainsaw Man mangaka Tatsuki Fujimoto is having an incredibly busy 2024. Not only has Chainsaw Man’s second saga gotten into full swing in the manga, but Fujimoto fans can expect a preciously announced Chainsaw Man movie this year, in addition to a film adaptation of Fujimoto-san’s 2021 one-shot, Look Back.

Look Back was announced with a YouTube teaser trailer and official Look Back website (via VG247). The manga version of Look Back is pretty short but incredibly sweet, and if you’re interested, you can read it on the Shonen Jump app right now.

It’s an incredibly human story, with a surprise supernatural twist. The movie adaptation is being animated by Studio Durian, with Kiyotaka Oshiyama directing. Oshiyama-san has previously worked on celebrated series including Gurren Lagann, Devilman: Crybaby, Space Dandy, and yes, even Chainsaw Man. If you want to watch something Oshiyama-san has directed before, we suggest the best anime you’ve never watched, Flip Flappers.

A comment from Fujimoto-san can be found on the Look Back website, which reads as follows: “This work was created in order to force myself to digest what was inside me that I couldn't digest. I don't know if I was able to draw it or not, but I am grateful that so many people were involved in turning this work into a movie. Director Oshiyama is a monster animator that most anime otakus don't know about, so as an otaku, I'm looking forward to seeing this work on screen.”

Look Back features a young girl named Fujino who is celebrated for her manga drawing talents, and gets featured in her school newspaper regularly. She felt confident about her position until a new artist started submitting comics that were far more detailed and realistic than her own. Fujino sees this new artist as a competitor and dedicates herself to improving, only to have her new rival’s talent shoved in her face.

The two happen to meet, and Fujino’s rival Kyomoto is revealed to be a huge fan of Fujino’s comics and they were the reason she started drawing and submitting art. The two combine their talents to create manga together, only the relationship frays over time.

If you want to know more about what happens you can either read Look Back on the Shonen Jump app or wait for the Look Back anime movie to release on June 28, 2024.
