Sculpture Walk brings new artwork to Downtown

May 22—For Downtown St. Joseph, spring not only brings flowers but several new sculptures as well with the 11th annual Allied Arts Council Sculpture Walk.

In partnership with the Downtown Community Improvement District, the Sculpture Walk features an eclectic mix of 15 new sculptures created by artists across the state and country.

This year's exhibit features a piece by artist Tim Adams of Webster City, Iowa. His work, "River People," is a stainless steel and Lexan sculpture that is focused on movement and grace.

"I was inspired by these giant grasses that are majestic in their stature and graceful in their simplicity," Adams said. "Their swaying and rustling in the wind seem like an effortless performance, but below the surface, these plants give shelter to all kinds of creatures in every season and their ability to live on little water and in marginal soil is a tribute to nature's wisdom."

Another new arrival for the walk, "When the Clouds Break" is the work of Jodie Bliss from Colorado Springs, Colorado.

"This piece was inspired by a feeling that seems to be universal, and one that I certainly feel from time to time, of being precariously balanced, juggling many things at once," Bliss said. "It's a reminder of the ebb and flow of life and that it can be stressful some days, but then there will be sunshine, joy and clarity again."

St. Joseph residents are encouraged to vote for their favorite sculpture by completing the ballot found in the walking tour brochure and dropping it off in one of the ballot boxes, the Allied Arts office or the St. Joseph Convention and Visitor's Bureau.

Everyone is invited to join the free guided "First Walk" tour on the corner of Fourth and Felix streets at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 12.
