San Diego is one of the worst cities for bed bug infestations: study

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Bedbugs are commonly transported into homes on luggage, clothing and used furniture, with short-term stays such as hotels and motels being the most likely places to find them.

A new study by Pest Gnome ranked San Diego in the top 10 worst cities in the U.S. for bed bug infestations, placing it at No. 8.

To rank the cities, researchers looked at the 500 biggest metropolitan areas and compared them across three categories: the number of accommodations, multi-unit residential buildings and population density. They also looked at access to exterminators.

New York topped the list, ranking No. 1 in all three categories, followed by Los Angeles at No. 2.

According to Pest Gnome, there were over 105,000 average monthly Google searches for bed bug-related keywords in the past year in New York.

According to the County of San Diego, experts suggest keeping your bags off the floor and bed, and checking between the mattress and the box spring when staying at a hotel. The county says the only way to get rid of bedbugs is by using insecticides or contacting a licensed pest control company.

Other cities in the top 10 were Houston, Chicago, San Francisco, Miami Beach, Boston, Washington, D.C. and Jersey City.
