Sage the Miniature Poodle Wins Best in Show at the 2024 Westminster Dog Show

The Best in Show round of the 148th Annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show took place on May 14 at New York City's USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center

The Westminster Dog Show has crowned its next top dog,

On May 14, Sage the Miniature Poodle won Best in Show at the 148th Annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show Presented by Purina Pro Plan. The famous canine competition — the second-longest continuous sporting event in the U.S. — was held at New York City's USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, home to the U.S. Open's Arthur Ashe Stadium, for the second year in a row.

Sage the female Miniature Poodle — show name GCHG CH Surrey Sage — triumphed over 2,500 other dogs from more than 200 breeds in Westminster's confirmation show. To win Best in Show, Sage first had to win Best of Breed for her breed and Best in Group for the Non-Sporting Group.

The Miniature Poodle, from Houston, Texas, was joined by the 2024 Westminster Dog Show's six other Best in Group winners in the Best in Show round. The other pups who competed in the Best in Show round were Louis the Afghan Hound of the Hound Group, Mercedes the German Shepherd of the Herding Group, Comet the Shih Tzu of the Toy Group, Micha the Black Cocker Spaniel of the Sporting Group, Monty the Giant Schnauzer of the Working Group, and Frankie the Colored Bull Terrier of the Terrier Group.

Professional dog handler Rosalind Kramer judged the final round of the 2024 Westminster Dog Show. She named Mercedes the German Shepherd Reserve Best in Show, Westminster's runner-up title.

Sage did not win alone; the dog's handler, Kaz Hosaka, was by the canine's side the entire competition and helped lead the Miniature Poodle to victory. Hosaka shared at the end of the Best in Show round that he is retiring from showing dogs after participating in 45 Westminster Dog Shows. Sage succeeds Buddy Holly the Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen, the hound who won Best in Show at the 2023 Westminster Dog Show.

Other winners from the 2024 Westminster Dog Show include Nimble. Nimble the All-American Dog — All-American is Westminster's term for mixed-breed canines — won the Masters Agility Championship.

The black and white pup is the first mixed-breed canine to win the agility competition at the Westminster Dog Show. Nimble was also the first pooch from the 12-inch division to earn the top spot at the Masters Agility Championship.

Nimble, a 6-year-old female dog, bested 351 agility competitors to win. Nimble, who has the show name NAC MACH Breezy Blue's Be Quick! T2B MXF, won the championship round with a time of 28.76 seconds.
