NYFW Tip Alert: How to Pull Off Clip-In Bangs
How to get instant bangs — with tips from the NYFW runway!

Rebecca Minkoff’s Spring 2016 show was inspired by the mod ‘60s — specifically singer/beauty icon/Mick Jagger’s incredibly cool girlfriend Marianne Faithfull. Many people point to Jane Birkin’s nearly iconic lash-grazing bangs as the end all be all, but Faithfull’s thick, tousled fringe is tough to beat. If you’ve ever had bangs, you know the dilemma: They’re tough to maintain, annoying to grow out, and never look as good on you as they do on whichever cool girl inspired you to chop your hair (ahem, Dakota Johnson, we’re looking at you).

So what’s a girl to do when the mood strikes for instant bangs? Clip-ins! OK, before you roll your eyes, get this: Only a few of the gorgeous bang-adorned models at Rebecca Minkoff’s show had real bangs. The rest were all fake, and we bet you couldn’t tell. We caught up with hairstylist Jeanie Syfu for TRESemme on how to make clip-in bangs look fab and totally convincing.

“It’s such a commitment to have bangs, so clip-ins are a great way to change up your look,” says Syfu. The stylist says when it comes to hair pieces getting real hair (not synthetic) is the only way to go. For the Minkoff show they used a full crown of fake bangs (they look like circles of hair) to give the added benefit of volume at the back for a Brigette Bardot effect. “Clip-ins all tend to be very shiny and look fake, so you want to mattify them.” Syfu suggests misting the bangs with water and roughing them up. “Put mousse in, wet them down, and style them — you want to blow them out before you pop them in.”
Next, it’s time to attach the hair piece. On the models, Syfu made two small ponytails at their temples with their real hair and secured them with tiny elastics. Then she used these ponytails as anchors, and clipped the bangs to them so they’d stay put. Voila! Fake fringe. Get ready for instant bangs —nobody will ever know.
