Run for Fun: Importance of proper breathing while running

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — In this week’s episode of Run for Fun, we take a deep breath and look at how important proper breathing is to running.

It’s easy to focus on running faster and working harder, but runners are less likely to work on their breathing techniques. Taking deep, full breaths allows oxygen to get to the muscles and can even decrease fatigue.

Leigh Spann and Coach Maria chat with Tammy Thompson, a certified yoga instructor in Tampa and an avid runner, about breathing techniques.

As long as you are running or walking at an easy pace, nose or mouth breathing will suffice, but once the effort increases, the body and muscles need more oxygen. Runners can try to inhale through the nose and exhale through the mouth. Exhaling fully can help remove more carbon dioxide and help you inhale more deeply.

There’s also diaphragmatic breathing, or belly breathing, that helps with full oxygen exchange and helps the body use oxygen more efficiently. Try lying down with your knees bent, as you take a deep breath in, your stomach should expand rather than your chest. Then, breathe out slowly.

Posture can also impact your breath during the run. Slumped shoulders may cut off air from expanding into the diaphragm.

Proper breathing can help runs feel more comfortable and enjoyable. For more tips on ways to Run for Fun, be sure to watch or listen to previous episodes.
